The The National Health Education Standards (NHES) External Link are written expectations for what students should know and be able to do by grades 2, 5, 8, and 12 to promote personal, family, and community health. The standards provide a framework for curriculum development and selection, instruction, and student assessment in health education.

Health Content Standard

  • Apply the scientific method to the investigation of a mystery disease.
  • Analyze and interpret epidemiological data—maps, graphs, and patient profiles—to reach a hypothesis about a disease.

Standard 5: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.

  • Associate the bacterium, Vibrio cholerae, with the disease it causes, cholera.
  • Classify bacteria into each of three basic shapes: bacilli, spirilla, and cocci.
  • Relate the importance of Germ Theory to our understanding of present-day diseases.

Standard 1: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.

  • Recognize the interaction between population, resources, and the environment.
  • Identify the symptoms of cholera.
  • Determine the treatment for cholera.
  • Describe the best way to prevent the spread of cholera (sanitation and hygiene).
  • Recognize the health risks associated with a collapse of infrastructure caused by natural hazards such as earthquakes or floods.

  • Describe what epidemiologists do.
  • Recognize the name John Snow and associate his contributions to the early field of epidemiology.
  • Associate Robert Koch, Louis Pasteur, and Joseph Lister with their contributions to Germ Theory.
  • Observe the cooperation required by various individuals, with different areas of expertise in scientific investigation.
